It is, however, rather slow progress.

Last month my inspiration and motivation completely vanished. I'd load the game to take some pictures, stare at the screen for 10 minutes, quit and start playing Oblivion, great for my Imperial lousy for the progress of chapter 20.

Just this week I've finally got my inspiration back and have been sorting slides/drafting out what I want to write. I thought I'd be finished with the slide sorting today, and I have finished sorting what pictures I've got, I've just realised that I need more pictures. I have to get Edward to throw another toga party and take enough pictures that show a) that there's a party and b) that there's more than two people present.

I still need to write the chapter, but I do have a pretty good idea of what I want to say in the plotty scenes, it'll be the mundane things like the birthday and the birth that give me the trouble.

I've also made the cover:

I hope to be finished with this chapter by the end of December (I just hope my muse doesn't desert me again).

Oh yes, I now have a Dreamwidth, there's nothing there yet and I don't know exactly what I'm going to do with it, but it does exist. I'll also be posting the family pictures I've taken in my prosperity 'hood sometime tomorrow most likely, just because I like them and feel like sharing.

I seem to be getting into a habit of posting about once a week to explain why I'm not posting *sigh*, this post isn't breaking the habit.

Chapter 20 of the Discworlds is still a work in progress, I am creeping ever closer to getting it out and I think some of my inspiration is coming back, I actually had some nice ideas while I was falling asleep last night. I do want to get the last of the extra pictures taken today so I can properly get started on putting together the powerpoint.

Last week was spent not simming at all. I got a new game on Monday and have been playing it pretty exclusively since. The game is Dragon Age Origins and it is awesome. It's got everything I want in a game - the gameplay is fun, challenging but not frustrating, the story is interesting, the characters are more than two dimensional and there's a lot of humor and extra depth that isn't necessary but adds so much. I'll probably be playing it for quite a while and it will join Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights 2, Mass Effect and Fallout 3 in being constantly installed on my computer (once I get them all installed again).

When I did start playing sims again on Monday I played my prosperity and I've got through 3 rounds since then. I reached the point of having 100 living, playable sims on Monday and am now up to 105. I'm working on a series of family pictures so I can show off the neighbourhood without having to post hundreds of pictures, I've got 5 out of 16 so far. The next family involves 2 elders, 2 adults, 5 teens, a toddler and a baby so that's going to be fun.

How's everyone else's week been so far?

My new computer arrived Friday afternoon and it's a monster. I don't think it's the fact I haven't had a tower for five years that makes it look so big, I think it just is big, the specs are pretty monstrous too.

I spent Saturday installing Sims2 and all the expansion packs (a very tedious experience) and then copying all the files on my old computer that I need. There was a brief moment of panic the first time I tried to run the game when it gave me a message about not being able to find any directx 9.0c compatible devices but it turned out I'd installed the noCD crack wrong.

After sorting that out everything has gone smoothly. My loading time (clicking on the icon to being in a house) is down from 2 hours (which I know is ridiculous) to less than 20 minutes. I can turn the game to speed three and zoom all the way out without time slowing to a crawl, even on a 5x5 lot. Like I said I love my new computer.

I'm still stuck on the Discworlds and I don't have office on my new computer so I decided to test the computer by playing a new legacy family (in a new neighbourhood), for fun (and because I've been reading a few of them lately) I decided to make it an awesomesauce legacy (rules). I don't know whether I'll ever write anything about them but I thought I'd show a couple of pictures:

Zydras Farbe - founder

Couple more pictures )
I was thinking it might help me get back into the writing mindset if I write something like this (no plot, no complicated narrative) but I don't want to abandon the Discworlds for too long.

The chapter is still refusing to let me write it, I have pages and pages of notes but whenever I sit down to try and write anything properly my mind just goes blank.  It's nearly as bad when I try to get some pictures for the scenes I have written - I've had the game open and house loaded since 10 this morning and yet I haven't actually done anything.

It might take me even longer now as I'm about to get a new computer (late birthday present), there's nothing wrong with the one I'm using now, it's just a bit old and slow.  The new one is a monster of a machine, much, much more powerful than I actually need to play sims, but I do also play other games (I've also pre-ordered Dragon Age so that'll be something of a distraction too).  It's probably going to arrive at the end of the week so I need to work out what I'm going to transfer from my current computer to the new one and start copying files to my external hard drive.  Maybe I'll finally find inspiration while I do this.

My cat is feeling better too (as far as I can tell).

Chapter 20 is rapidly becoming the chapter I just can't seem to write.  I'm not sure why this is, it's barely plotty (which may actually be part of the problem), I'm not dealing with characters I don't like or don't know, it's a pretty standard legacy chapter.  I think a big part of the problem is that this is a chapter that needs to happen but doesn't involve any big plot moments so I'm not feeling particularly inspired.  There's some setting up of what's to come but it's mostly aging and beginning to set up my spares with their future partners.  It's already taken me three days to shoot a single scene involving a conversation between Edward and Dorian and I've got one whole picture to use so far.  Hopefully I'll get over this soon.

It's not helping that I'm slightly distracted by one of my cats.  I think she may have cat flu, if she does it'll make it the fourth time in five years.  It's not that she isn't vaccinated, she is, and gets the booster every year, but that hasn't stopped her getting it.  At the moment she's just sneezing a lot and has a very runny nose and runny eyes.  I'm hoping it doesn't get any worse.  Last year she managed to get a herpes infection of her eye along with the flu and had to be taken to the vet every other day for two weeks (thankfully the vet is nice and stopped charging for the consultations after the third visit).

Ugh
I've found yet another reason why I should update more regularly - the longer it takes me to write a chapter the more complicated it gets.

Chapter 20 has gone from being almost entirely devoted to aging my sims so I could get on with the main plot to a mix of aging and plot advancement.  It's also become two chapters and I'm going to have to rethink where they start/end as I've added two more scenes since I last planned it out.

I'm seriously considering dropping the university plot I've been planning for Eric and Esk because that adds at least two more updates and I'm beginning to get fed up of this generation.  I want to get to the next big part of the Esme plot and, eventually, the Edward/Dorian babies.  If I do drop it I'd probably use it for a later generation (although it would have to be modified to fit the sims I end up with) given how much time I've spent thinking about it.

For now I'll just be shooting the extra scenes I need, hunting down some costumes (both for halloween and for a scene I'm considering) and leaving some comments over on boolprop.

I've made 30 so far and have 12 to go.  It's my own fault for deciding I wanted 6 sims of each gender for each of the 3 vacation destinations to give me some variety (and some potential spouses), plus 42 is a nice number.

I think not giving them the standard Bon Voyage outfits is also making this take longer, I just didn't want them to all look the same.  There's still a theme to the three locations (though I'm not following it 100%) and I have put a few sims into the outfits that came with BV.  Twikki Island gets sims with darker skin (S3 or S4), dark hair and dark eyes, dressed for tropical weather.  Three Lake gets sims with light skin (pale, S1 and S2), light hair and green or blue eyes , dressed for colder weather.  Takemizu Village gets sims with the widest range of skintone (pale - S3), black hair and brown or grey eyes, dressed in asian inspired clothes.

When I've done making all the sims I'm going to have to change their surnames in SimPE (I'm making them in batches of 6) and probably give them recessives (as at least half of them have black hair).  Then I can get back to writing the next chapter.

I've been meaning to do this for a while but kept getting distracted.  This was originally going to be a fairly indepth discussion of the plot so far and what's going on inside some of my sims heads (Esme and Edward in particular) but then I realised that because the plot isn't over yet I was either going to have to be very cryptic and not make much sense or give away a lot of what I'm planning, so now this is just some extra pictures and gameplay comments.

20 pictures )

That's it for now.  I've got to get back to writing the next chapter (still got a long way to go on that) and making vacation townies.  The problem with empty templates is that if the game spawns vacation townies they lack the ability to teach the gestures and dances (at least that's what I've read and I don't want to test it out in the Discworld 'hood) so I need to make my own before I can continue with the Esme/Edward plot.

Chapter 20 has now turned into chapters 20 and 21.  I'm stuck at about 300 pictures, it's surprising how many pictures you can fill with fluff, and rather than do any drastic cutting I'm going to restructure slightly, taking what was the end off chapter 20, adding a bit more play and calling it chapter 21.  It does have the adding bonus of guaranteeing that I'm not starting and finishing my uni side-plot in the same chapter (as was looking possible).

I am making progress towards finishing but distractions keep popping up.  Most recent was Jamie's latest post causing me to make my first non-legacy specific painting recolour.  This in turn led to me installing AnyGameStarter (to check what paintings came with the base game) and having a fight with my anti-virus software which insisted on classifying one of the components as a trojan.

Anyway, while I was loading my game to take an in-game pic (and take another picture for the upcoming chapter, bad idea to give a sim a specific, but temporary, facial detail and remove it before taking all the pictures) it occured to me where the perfect place to stick the new picture would be:

Pride of place in Eric's future home (I do wonder if I should attempt to recolour the frame too).

I'm making slow progress on the next chapter.  So far I've got a shortlist of 360 pictures, which, I hope, I'll be able to reduce further otherwise it'll end up as either a two-parter or just two separate chapters.  I'm also working on organising the extra pictures from the previous chapter so I can finally get around to sharing my thoughts on that.

I've been thinking of names and decided I'm going to rename one of the E kids (fortunately the only one who hasn't appeared in a chapter yet).  Baby number 10 is currently called Elenor (after Elenor of Tsort, the Discworld equivalent of Helen of Troy) but that's only one letter off my own name and the name Sim!Widget uses in game.  With her and Dorfl working together now there is no way he doesn't know what her first name is (and he quite likely calls her by it) and it doesn't seem likely he'd name his youngest daughter after her (maybe if she'd been born after they completed their research).  So Elenor will become Eulalie (after Eulalie Butts, the headmistress of Quirm College for Young Ladies, the school Susan is attending in Soul Music).

I'm also having a small problem with my greek house - nothing game-breaking but annoying.  There seem to be some areas of the floor that aren't recognised when I try to place stairs - the stairs go straight through to the ground (the house is on a foundation), I wouldn't have noticed except that one of these areas is right at the bottom of the existing stair meaning that when I tried to change the stairs I couldn't.  I'll have to find a way to fix it, put up with the stairs that are there or rebuild the house on another lot, I just haven't decided which yet..

I'm making progress on chapter 20, I'm currently pulling out the pictures I'm going to use and working out what order I want things to happen in.  Hopefully I'll get the chapter up in the next week (which'll be helped if my brain starts giving me ideas for this chapter rather than many chapters ahead).  While I'm waiting for my game to load (so I can shoot/re-shoot any scenes that I need to) I thought I'd share some pictures of the current state of my neighbourhood.

I really should be revising for my viva on Friday (I still haven't decided if one of the external examiners being my ex-supervisor is a good or a bad thing). However, I spent over an hour battling with the printer and binder so I need a break, and it's my birthday (I really don't feel like I should be 24 already) so I'm doing simming stuff. Not actual playing because my vertigo has reappeared and makes playing unpleasant (think extreme sea-sickness) but clearing up my downloads and finally uploading the multi-PT hack I've had finished for a week or so.

I know I haven't been around much, or at all really, recently, unfortunately masters stuff has been taking over my life and when I have had time I've just wanted to play.  I've got a presentation tomorrow (which I'm quite relaxed about) and a viva next Friday (which I'm really not - less than an hour = 25% of my masters!), after that I should have a bit more time to spend online (and one of the first things I'll do is post a behind the scenes for chapter 19)

I have been playing an awful lot recently (more than I probably should have been), I've nearly got all the pictures I need for the next chapter, there's just a couple of plotty scenes to shoot and then I can start writing.

+6 pictures )

Now I really must finish my presentation on pteropods.

After four months it's finally finished.

Recap - Esme became a witch, distanced herself from the rest of the family and then disappeared off to uni. Edward grew up and with the help of his cousins overcame some of his shyness. He also met and fell for Dorian. Edward and Dorian headed off to university and all was good until Esme reappeared doing something unpleasant to Dorian.

I'm not 100% happy with the layout (and it's definately gone fuzzy) but it's got to the point where if I have to rearrange things again I'm going to scream (that's also the reason I put the recap in this post.rather than in the chapter itself).  Maybe I'll have another go at it when my project is finished.

Now I need to concentrate on my final project. I may or may not get a chance to reply to comments until the end of next week.

I haven't really got much further with the next chapter yet.  I also haven't written much for my project yet.  I have, however, managed to fix the ages on all my cc clothes (make all adult clothes also enabled for YA, remove the elder age from adult clothes) and townify it all (should make for some interesting aging up outfits)

And I started a new project.  I've never been 100% happy with my multi-PT hack (because I don't actually think there's all that much variety in it - something only I would probably think because I know how I made the sims) so I've started making a new one.  Pictures of the aliens (that might still be tweaked a bit) below the cut.

What's distracting me now )

I must start writing this weekend (both legacy and project), which means I really must resist loading the game or bodyshop.

I'm getting closer to releasing the next chapter.  I've now got all the pictures I need (I think, I might have to get a couple more to fill in some gaps but I won't know that until later) now all I need to do is write it.  It's taken me longer than expected to get to this stage ( I had hoped to finish it early last week) partly because I completely changed the structure of the chapter during my last week in Amsterdam and introduced a couple of new scenes for which I had to build a whole new dorm (which I'm rather proud of) and landscape my self-sim's garden (which is why I ended up playing her).

Today also marks the two week mark before my project hand-in date which means I'll soon be required to have nothing but planktonic snails on my mind.  I need to get this chapter written, it's been fermenting in my brain for so long I'm having trouble thinking of anything else.  I also owe a lot of comments and there's a couple of chapters of some legacies I haven't even read yet, hopefully I can get everything done by the end of the week.

I just hope that sim!Widget (who goes by the name Eleanor Tutelary in my game) is having my share of bad luck and it isn't a portent of things to come for me.  During the three days I played her, to get the garden landscaped and the pictures I needed taken, she was throwing up about a dozen times a day, she got fired, came home from work with flu twice, and got struck by lightning.  I do like her new garden though.

I had my last day in the lab on Wednesday and got my last sequences back yesterday so what I have now is what I'm going to be writing my project about.  I also finally know when I 'm going to be home - I will be getting on a train back to London on the 14th of August and arrive in London at 7pm, the rest of the night will be spent drinking at the student union bar (are you going to be there Gin?).

I plan on doing nothing that weekend that involves me moving further than the kitchen and I hope to get the next Discworld chapter finished then.  Speaking of which I've started sorting the pictures I've already got so I've got a better idea of what I need to shoot and so it'll be quicker to put them into powerpoint when I'm ready.  Some point soon I'll be uploading a test presentation so I know what need to do to my pictures to make them look good in this form.

I know I could go back to the exchange, especially as I don't have a chapter uploaded elsewhere yet but there are a couple of reasons I don't want to.  Mainly I simply don't want to install the patch, I have no idea what it actually does and a patch to my game to fix an issue with their website just seems strange.  I also like the idea of being able to put together my chapters without having to run the game and there's the additional style flexibility that using powerpoint offers.  At some point I plan on putting all my old chapters into that format as well (whether I'll ever get around to it I don't know).

The custom content deletion is going well.  So far I've deleted about 2,700 files and I've barely touched bodyshop yet and still have quite a lot of furniture to sort through.

As I'll be home in less than a week I feel like sharing some pictures from the last play session I had before I left.

In order to take my mind off the disaster my project is turning into I've begun the sorting of the mess my downloads folder is.

When I left university (which was the last time I simmed on this laptop) I had 10,000 files of custom content, which I thought was a lot.  I now have four times that amount.  My loading times are slightly ridiculous and I'm sure I don't use all that stuff.  My aim in the next couple of weeks is to reduce that figure by at least 10,000, hopefully more.

So far I've divided my downloads folder into 3 categories that I'm going through in turn (the size is so silly that I can't fit the entire thing on my computer at the same time).

Original file count:

Total - 39,274 files
Bodyshop - 15,052 files
Build and Buy mode - 23,103 files
Other (hacks, pose boxes, objects for photoshoots) - 1,119 files

Criteria for deletion
  • I just don't like it
  • Never used it and only have a vague "one day maybe" idea where I will use it
  • Poor quality - visible seams, pixelated, odd shape to mesh, gaps, lack of decent recolours.
  • Already got something almost identical (then I have to decide which to keep)

I've gone through the walls, floors and fences and deleted about 600 files so far (these categories were already pretty well sorted).  Right now I'm working on my windows and door.  There are some things I'm having real difficulty deleting, these - www.modthesims.info/download.php, for example, they're really well made, I really like them but anytime I try and use them they just don't fit and I end up using something different, all of Adele's stuff is giving me the same problem.

What I might do is delete everything that doen't fit in with my normal game and then go hunting for cc for specific sets I might want to build later and keep them in specific folders out of my downloads until I do need them.

This is very, very delayed (who knew my project would take up so much of my time) but I can still pretty much remember what I've been up to.

(We in all this is myself and Martin, the other student from the museum who's with me).

Saturday
We decided not to do an organised tour and instead went wndering.  First around the area of the hostel which is where we found the internet laundry (I guess it gives people something to do while they wait for their washing to finish) where I wrote the first part of this.  We also found a reasonably large local market and had a look around, didn't buy anything as we were both pretty much at the limit as far as luggage is concerned (poor Martin turned up to the airport with bags 9kg over the weight limit and had to pay £81!).

We then headed into the centre by tram and explored a bit.  We became sort of lost, it was only sort of because we kept returning to the same square and when we were in that square we knew where we were, it was only when we left that we didn't.  It was during this wandering I found a new copy of Apartment Life and decided to cheer myself up by buying it.

Continues under cut )

That's all for this entry, I'll post part 3 which'll continue the week later (I'll try ot to make it too much later).

Sims can be so very frustrating at times.

I've been playing my temporary pseudo-legacy family this evening. It's getting reasonably close to the hnadover of generation 1 to generation 2, the oldest kids are teen, youngest is a child, dad is a week from elderhood.

THEN dad goes and gets himself abducted, 7 days from being an elder so he comes back pregnant, with not one but two little green babies. He's going to be an elder by the time they're children *sigh*.

As I'm talking about them I might as well post some of the pics from the family.

Short legacy intro )

That's enough for tonight.  I'll post more another day when I'm not so tired/annoyed at Adrian.
